How I paint SS camo in 15mm

Ok, again, I have gotten this question a couple of times now, so I thought I would write a short description!

The SS had as far as I am aware a whole lot of different combinations of camo schemes, but in my painting I have focused on three (and the fieldgrau thrown in here and there) looks, I don’t know if these are actually the right terms for them but they give a general idea:

  • The pea-dot
  • The autumn oak leaf
  • The spring oak leaf

A few restrictions that I found to be good and have been told to follow is that you should never use peadot on the helmet covers, try to identify what type of uniform the specific figure are wearing, if they are wearing the tunic I’m trying not to paint it fieldgrau.

The colours I use are (almost all Vallejo) as follows:

  • Primer (any will do but I usually go with black)
  • Base coat: I learned this from panzershule, German Camouflage Black Brown , Vallejo 70.822

Depending on what pattern I want, I then add the midtone, German camo pale brown 70825 for oak leaf looking pattern, and for peadot I use 70874 Tan earth.

When adding the midtone I am careful to leave the base coat showing in recesses and in-between different clothing items, all adding contrast and therefore making all of the hard work visible from a distance.

Colours used for oak leaf

For oak leaf you can go 2 directions, spring and autumn, I have understood that both of these were used during all season so I mix and match to my heart’s content!

For the pattern on the spring camo I use these colours:

  • German camo dark green 70979
  • Escorpena green 72032 (ridiculously bright yes)

For the pattern on the autumn camo I use these colours:

  • Chocolate brown 70872
  • Light brown 70929

For the pea dot camo I try to make a representation of the general feel of the pattern, and not copy the actual design.

How I try to combine the colours

For the pattern on the peadot camo I use these colours:

  • German camo dark green 70979
  • Escorpena green 72032
  • Flat flesh 70955/ bf army painter European skin 385

And that’s about it really, after that it’s paint the details, skin weapons etc. and call it a day, I don’t use any shades or filters etc.
